Over the past few years alone, we have lost so many of the pioneering musicians who have help evolve the sound of popular music today. Yet the creative influence and everlasting legacies of these transcending musical icons, still thrives within the next generation of music innovators. One of the young creative talents leading this path, is UK based singer, songwriter and producer MNEK.
From the producing brilliance of Jimmy and Terry Lewis, to the vocal range of Mariah Carey, MNEK is not only fan of many musical greats, but he is also a student of their timeless art. This commitment in learning from the best, has offered MNEK the opportunity to work with the best as well.
At the age of only 22, MNEK has already produced and written hit records for some of the most electrifying artist on the planet, including Kylie Mongue, Lianne La Havas, Alex Newell, Brayton Bowman, Clean Bandit, Zara Larsson, JoJo, Madonna. MNEK has also worked with Queen Bey, by co-writing Beyonce’s hit single “Hold Up”, off her platinum selling album *Lemonade*
Outside of his producing & songwriting credits, MNEK also shines as a superb solo artist, with tracks like Every Little Word, Wrote A Song, The Rhythm and his latest hit single At Night I Think About You. With this growing success, MNEK has also been honored with an 2016 ASCAP Vanguard Award as well as Attitude’s Breakout Artist Of The Year Award.
Another inspirational aspect surrounding MNEK growing success, is that he has gained these creative accolades, all while authentically being himself. As proud black gay man, MNEK is joining the ever expanding list of chart topping artist of color, who also proudly embraces their LGBTQ+ identity. In a in-depth interview with Attitude magazine, MNEK shared why it’s important him, to be a visible artist who is openly black and gay
“as a kid, a big part of how uncomfortable I was, was I didn’t have a role model. I didn’t have someone on TV I could liken myself to. I take it as my responsibility to be exactly who I wanted to see on TV. If anyone can see themselves in me that’s fucking great”
Like many of the greats before him, MNEK is carrying the torch for the next generation of pop music icons. Look out for MNEK’s debut album, which is slated to be released in 2017.
